A Note from our Founder

When I initially began bicycling, I began as many do—recreationally. Quickly, I became immersed within the charity cycling circuit. The experience of cycling was rewarding—and I discovered the importance of community and caring. And, quite frankly, I was quite content to remain there.

Unfortunately in April of 2001, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, Lupus. A disease that mistakes one’s tissues for foreign tissues, and one’s own immune system begins to attack your own body.

This diagnosis brought an immediate halt to my beloved long distance cycling journeys. Lupus presents many health challenges, and, unfortunately, right now Lupus Vasculitis has completely halted all cycling activities for me. But, at that time my life was touched with an activity—a lifestyle—that I just could not abandon.

In time, I began to integrate short distance trips to the store, to the library, to my friend’s house back into my life. These trips were satisfying, joyous, and healthy—healthy for my body, my environment and my community. They were easy and also enabled me to maintain a strong baseline of health and fitness.

These initial journeys into my rediscovered community are what provided me with the impetus to begin investigating innovative (or not so innovative) models of transportation.

Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bogota—these cities integrated active transportation models that just made “good sense”.

And so C.I.C.L.E. was born.

Inspired by my own experience and by transportation models abroad, I decided to share a lifestyle and a transportation choice.

Using Education and Community building programs and events that inspire, invite and encourage each and every one of you to experience joy, recreate a healthy community–build a healthy body and planet. C.I.C.L.E. invites (I invite) you to do the same.

Invite health and joy into your community and life. Rebuild your body, your environment–your soul.

Experience what one can sometimes only experience on two wheels with wind in hair—absolute liberation.

Join with C.I.C.L.E. Get involved. Volunteer. Make a donation of time and/or money. Most importantly, share your joy!

Sincerely,

Shay Wiessler Sanchez, Founder, Advisory Committee

Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers, staff and to my most dedicated co-founder and life-long partner, Liz Elliott. And to the community that makes it “all happen”.
