Friendly Streets : Healthy Body : Happy Planet
We believe that our cities can be places that support an overall high quality of life--where people can enjoy clean air, calm and friendly streets, and closely connected and diverse communities.
We envision our streets as vibrant, welcoming spaces that safely accommodate all road users, and prioritize the safe passage of people--on bike, on foot, by wheelchair, by bus and/or by train. The city infrastructure is people-friendly, and encourages healthy and active transportation options that not only build our bodies and our health, but also benefit our communities and our environment. Public green spaces are many, and our streets serve as much more than transportation corridors--they are also community-oriented social spaces, where people of all ages can safely bike, walk, play, and socialize with their neighbors.
The Challenge
In Los Angeles County, people’s choice in transportation impacts much of our experience. Congested commutes, sprawl, air and noise pollution, sedentary lifestyle and its associated consequences, loss of connection to neighbors and communities; all are unintended consequences of automobile dependence, and have become the undesirable hallmarks of a Los Angeles lifestyle.
Yet sixty percent of commutes in Los Angeles County are less than five miles, and forty percent of trips in the U.S. are two miles or less. Many of these trips can easily be converted from car trips into bicycling trips. CICLE works to get people shifting these short car trips into bike trips.
Utilizing a multi-faceted approach which incorporates web-based outreach, social and recreational bicycle rides, festivals and events, and bicycle safety workshops – CICLE educates and encourages people to think about bicycling as an active and healthy lifestyle option, a valid and sustainable transportation choice, and as a means to reconnect with their neighbors and their community.
