Jan 14 '09 - 204 W - Vote Good + 4 :: Bad - 7 Bike Boulevard to run through ABQ

Published January 14, 2008 by KOB.com

The City of Albuquerque is spending $400,000 on a so-called Bicycle Boulevard that is supposed to make riding safer for bicyclists.

The boulevard will run from Mountain Road, through 14th Street, and through Silver Avenue. The stretch will be seven miles long.

Officials say the stretch of road will become more bicycle friendly and renamed to Bicycle Boulevard.

The speed limit will also be reduced to either 18 or 22 miles per hour. Officials say the odd speed limits will get drivers’ attention.

"It's still fast enough for cars to get where they need to go, but slow enough that bicycles feel safe," said BikeABQ Vice President Ben Savoca.

Albuquerque's mayor says it's good for the environment too.

"For some of these areas, automobiles are going to get extra alert because they'll be told that there will be cyclists here, and cyclists have first priority on these roads, cyclists pay for these roads like everyone else," said Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez.

The project should be completed by spring.
