BIKE WEEK PASADENA 2009
The third-annual citywide event takes place Tuesday, May 11 to Saturday, May16
With bike rides, film screenings, presentations and parties, Bike Week promotes bicycling as a viable, healthy, and sustainable transportation choice.

PASADENA— Community members of all ages are invited to join in a week of festivities, workshops, and rides that celebrate and encourage bicycling as a healthy alternative to the automobile. The third-annual Bike Week Pasadena kicks off Monday, May 11, and runs through Saturday, May16, 2009 with daily events at locations throughout Pasadena. The citywide effort to highlight the benefits of bicycling will include bicycle tours for all ages and abilities. It will also feature a presentation of living a car-free life, a screening of the documentary “Contested Streets,” workshops on shopping on two wheels, Ladies Night at One Colorado, and a closing party. All events are free. Bike Week is produced by the nonprofit advocacy organization Cyclists Inciting Change Through Live Exchange (C.I.C.L.E.) in partnership with the City of Pasadena, One Colorado, and the Playhouse District.

“We invite everyone to come learn about the many benefits of city bicycling, to meet their neighbors, and to experience the absolute joy of riding bikes in such a vibrant and scenic city as Pasadena,” says Liz Elliot, executive director of C.I.C.L.E. “Communities with high rates of city bicycling enjoy less traffic congestion, better air quality, increased physical fitness and a greater sense of community.”

Due to Bike Week’s growing popularity, along with the understanding that cycling is important to community members in all neighborhoods, Bike Week programming takes place in a variety of areas, from Northwest Pasadena to Daisy Villa, South Lake Avenue, and the Playhouse District.

The week kicks off Monday with a community screening of the esteemed 2006 documentary “Contested Streets,” at Travis Auditorium at Fuller Theological Seminary. The documentary explores the rich diversity of New York City street life before the automobile, and shows how NYC, following examples of other modern cities, can reclaim its streets as vibrant public spaces. On Tuesday participants can learn how to curb their use of the car with the C.I.C.L.E. presentation “Lose up to 3,000 Pounds in One Day: The Amazing Car-Lite Diet” at the NATHA community center in Northwest Pasadena. Wednesday is Ladies Night at One Colorado, a progressive party sponsored by Pasadena Cyclery and hosted by One Colorado merchants. The event includes Ladies of Leisure: Pedal de Pasadena, a six-mile ride through central Pasadena, as well as mini clinics, fashion show, live music, treats, and free champagne.

Thursday’s event marks the kickoff of C.I.C.L.E.’s Bike Salon Series, an intimate social forum exploring issues of cycling in our community. On Friday Mayor Bill Bogaard and other city officials will join in the family-friendly Bike Night at the Rose Bowl, sponsored by Incycle Pasadena. On Saturday morning participants can learn how to use their bicycles for running errands in their neighborhoods with a Daisy-Villa Shopping Workshop.  The workshop will help cyclists determine best bike routes and easy transporting of groceries. It’s followed with a bike ride to Whole Foods in Hastings Ranch. The week culminates on Saturday with the East-West Express Ride and a closing party at One Colorado.  This year’s Bike Week takes place as the City of Pasadena updates its “Century of Bikes” bicycle master plan. The city’s Transportation Department contends that it aims to make Pasadena one of the most bike-friendly communities in the nation. Pasadena’s first master bike plan was created in 2000. Since then, 60 lane-miles of bike routes have been created citywide as well as a bike map that promotes routes, parking, and safety. More than 500 bike racks have been added to the city’s major streets, and to retails areas, schools, parks, and other city sites.
