Mar 31 '06 - 330 W - Vote Good + 6 :: Bad - 10 Code Pink LA Joins Fossil Fools Day Action

Released March 28, 2006 by  CODEPINK Women for Peace- LA

Join us April 1st for Fossil Fools Day!!!!

What: Fossil Fools Day protest to pressure Ford to increase their fuel
efficiency (Jumpstart Ford)
When: April 1st, 12 noon
Where: Galpin Ford at 15505 Roscoe Blvd., North Hills, California (CA) 91343
for directions go to http://www.galpinford.com/mapquest.jsp

We all know the war in Iraq is connected to our dependence on oil, but we often forget that we have the power to be a part of the solution. Responsible consumers must demand alternatives to kick America's oil addiction, not further it. What does this mean? It's time to Jumpstart
Ford! http://www.jumpstartford.com/

Why Ford? Because for 5 of the last 6 years, they have had the worst average fuel efficiency of any auto manufacturer. Many of Ford's SUVs average only 12 miles per gallon, less than half the fuel efficiency of a Model T produced over 80 years ago. The goal of the Jumpstart Ford campaign is to pressure Ford to increase their fuel efficiency.  This would have far-reaching benefits, including helping our environment and
decreasing the chances of another war for oil.

This Saturday afternoon, join CODEPINK L.A., Plug-In America, Rainforest Action Network and others to protest the war and the policies that "fueled" it at the largest Ford dealership in the country.  Saturday afternoon is a very busy time for car dealerships and we can have a dramatic impact on Ford's decision to continue producing polluting, wasteful vehicles as well as the public's desire to purchase them. Bring your signs, banners and lots of energy!

Please email samantha@codepinkalert.org to let us know you're coming
or if you have any questions.

Onwards towards peace,
Dana, Jamie, Jodie, Jillian, Maggie, Nancy, Samantha, Sarah, Tiffany

“The goal of the Jumpstart Ford campaign is to pressure Ford to increase their fuel efficiency.”

Wrong approach. Recent legislation mandates SUVs and light trucks to have increased fuel efficiency in a few years. Won’t work. Auto manufacturers hate this kind of mandate. The only way to get better fuel efficiency with internal combusion engine powered vehicles is by making the vehicle lighter or the engine smaller. Vehicles are already made with very thin sheet metal and a lot of plastic. People won’t buy a smaller SUV, or one with a smaller engine. They want BIG vehicles with BIG engines. The laws of physics cannot be denied, a big vehicle with a big engine is not going to get the fuel efficiency of a model T.

We all know the answer is to reduce demand, both for inefficient vehicles and for the fossil fuel itself. Gasoline prices are about to break the $3.00 per gallon barrier once again. We shall see what that does for demand.

Efficient Cars = Sick Cities
http://www.carbusters.org/magazine/no17...

Excerpt:
Dear environmentalists, what exactly is wrong with you? What prevents you from seeing what I and many other whole systems thinkers have been saying for decades? In focussing your efforts on attacking SUVs and supporting energy-efficient cars you are promoting sprawl, climate change, species extinction and war. It is almost unbelievable to me that you are still promoting sprawl after all these years. It is not the energy-efficient car but the energy-efficient city that we need.

We need to reconsider how we campaign for energy conservation. Richard Register proposes a roll-back-sprawl campaign. Granted it’s a more difficult task that making cars more fuel efficient, but at least we’d be going in the right direction.
