Bike Week Pasadena offers tours, movies and more

Gas prices are higher than ever and rising daily. And maybe you've noticed traffic jams are growing too. But never fear: a group called Cyclists Inciting Change thru LIVE Exchange (CICLE) is bringing some alternatives to town by sponsoring Bike Week Pasadena, starting Monday.

More than 15 free events will take place between Monday and May 20, ranging from Mayor Bill Bogaard personally leading the Mayor's Bike to Work Brigade from One Colorado to City Hall at 11 a.m. Monday to a series of free bike-related feature films, shorts and documentaries screening nightly at 8 p.m. Monday through May 19.

There are also educational workshops on topics such as bike repairs and navigating city traffic as well as hands-on demonstrations of how to fix flats.

There's even a romantic event at 6:45 p.m. May 18, when a Sunset Sonata Ride departs from the Patagonia store at 47 N. Fair Oaks Ave. in Old Pasadena and wends its way through the Arroyo Seco, offering riders the chance to watch the sunset. The classical string duet Telematique will play, while light hors d'oeuvres and drinks are served to participants before everyone cycles back to One Colorado for an evening of bike-related films.

An “Early Bird Special Tour” will travel from Patagonia to the Pasadena Farmers' Market at Victory Park on May 19, while on May 20 a bike tour starting at Patagonia will highlight Pasadena's 61,000 street trees during a “City Trees Ride and Picnic.” But perhaps the most enjoyable event for riders will take place on Tuesday, when the classic French comedy film “Jour de fête,” starring, written and directed by comic genius Jacques Tati, plays at 8 p.m. at One Colorado.
