Bikes in the City: Education Program
C.I.C.L.E. (Cyclists Inciting Change thru Live Exchange) is committed to promoting the bicycle as a viable, healthy, and sustainable transportation choice, and our ‘Bikes in the City’ workshop curriculum plays a big part in helping us accomplish our mission.
Education provides the knowledge, skills, and the confidence to get people bicycling safely, whether it’s for health, transportation, or to improve one’s quality of life. We’ve designed our workshops to meet with the varying needs of individuals—developing the skills and providing the knowledge that is appropriate for each person at his/her specific stage of learning.

Designed for the person that is new to riding in city traffic, this is the perfect workshop to get you, or someone you love, out there bicycling on city streets both safely and confidently. During the first part of the workshop, we will help you develop a thorough understanding of the basic principles of bicycle and traffic safety. For the second part of the workshop, you’ll need your bike, because we’ll be hittin’ the road for an easy bike ride that will put what you just learned into practice. This workshop requires that you are already confident with your bike handling abilities.
To attend this class you must be able to:
- Start your bike with confidence and ease.
- Balance and steer your bike
- Bring your bike to a smooth and controlled stop.
- Use your gears effectively
- Remove one hand from your handlebar to signal without veering.
- Look over your shoulder without veering.
If you need to boost your bike handling skills, please see our 'Can You Handle It?' and 'Handle It Better!' (above) workshop descriptions to better determine your skill level. Feel free to call or write us with any questions.
This intermediate level bike handling skills workshop will take your ability to the next level. Get ready to build a greater sense of confidence that will enhance your overall city bicycling experience. Gain better balance and control, and learn techniques that will enable you to navigate dense city traffic. Learn critical evasive maneuvers that will allow you to skillfully avoid tricky traffic situations and road debris.
