Free Workshops, Rides, and Bikes

In an effort to improve public health, Los Angeles-area bicycle organizations have joined forces to increase physical activity through bicycle use.  This collaboration consists of the city’s bicycle maintenance co-ops, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Collation, and C.I.C.L.E.  The initiative is called the County Cycling Collaborative (CCC).

C.I.C.L.E. is organizing free workshops and community rides throughout Los Angeles County.  The Los Angeles maintenance co-ops are conducting basic bicycle repair workshops designed to teach bicycle maintenance while C.I.C.L.E. is teaching classes on safe riding skills.  But wait, the bicycle love doesn’t stop there!  For those in need of a bicycle, refurbished bikes are being distributed at no cost to workshop communities by the CCC’s Bicycle Wrangler.

Bicycle Donation and Distribution

The Bicycle Wrangler and the Bici Libre workspace are a project of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC), to recover abandoned bicycles and redistribute them through the CCC educational programs and rides.

The Bici Libre workshop space is used to warehouse and repair the recovered bicycle and also serves as a non-profit, bike co-op.   Free bicycle repair and maintenance classes are taught regularly at the space. For a schedule of classes, visit the Bici Libre Facebook page.  For more information about bicycle donations, volunteering, and the Bici Libre co-op, contact Jonathan Green, Bicycle Wrangler, at jonathan [at] la-bike [dot] org.

C.I.C.L.E.’s Ride Leader Training Program

C.I.C.L.E. is training community members to organize and lead bicycle rides.  The goal of C.I.C.L.E.’s Ride Leader Training Program is develop leadership, community organization, and bicycle street-safety skills.  Through this program, we aim to promote ongoing rides and new bicycling communities.  Contact C.I.C.L.E. for more information about bringing community bicycle rides to your neighborhood.

DIY Bicycle Maintenance

The bicycle collectives that make up the CCC are volunteer-run spaces where people are taught how to fix and maintain bicycles.   For a modest fee, the public can rent stand time and will be given guidance from a volunteer mechanic.   These co-op’s DIY empowering mechanics are traveling far and wide to inspire and help other communities learn bicycle maintenance skills at the free public workshops.

Every few months, representatives of the CCC meet and discuss programing and issues related to bicycle co-ops.  Please contact Dan Dabek at dan [at] if you are interested in attending one of these meetings.  These meetings are a good resource for those who would like to start a community bicycle organization.  To get contact information and the locations of CCC co-ops visit our L.A. Bicycle Collective page.

The County Cycling Collaborative is a project of RENEW LA County, made possible by funding from the Department of Health and Human Services through the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health
