April’s Urban Ex RECAP: Pasadena’s Earth and Arts Festival Street Art Bicycle Ride:

streetartrideOn Aril 20th, about 60 riders joined C.I.C.L.E. at the Pasadena Earth and Arts Festival for beautiful tour of Pasadena street art! From “The Fork in the Road” to the “Jackie and Mack Robinson Memorial”, participants experienced Pasadena’s dynamic canvas of public art and deep history of community connection.

Artist Brian Carlson welcomed riders and introduced his piece, “The Phantasmagoria of Joy,” explaining its meaning and history. We were very lucky to have this unique insight during the ride! A huge thanks to Brian for coming out to share his creation with us!

Hugs, high fives and so much gratitude, as always, for our wonderful team of committed ride leaders! Our volunteers consistently create safe and friendly riding environments; we can’t do it without you!

ltr2Did you know that you can avoid many of the car-bicycle collisions by knowing how to ride properly in the street? In the class, you’ll learn basic principles of bicycle and traffic safety through instruction and live street experience.  The first portion of the class will include a presentation and participatory discussion on safety and skills. The second portion of class, you’ll need your bike, because we’ll be hitting the road for an easy ride that will put what you learned into practice.

When: June 8th: 11am-12:30pm
Where: 505 S. Wilson Ave, Pasadena CA.  Ground-Floor meeting room
Price: Free.  Caltech’s BikeLab generously subsidized this class.
RSVP to:  Space is limited.

SAFETY TIP of the Month:  So Happy Together! More than solo, riding with others!

Whether you are riding with your boo or in a groupridelarge group, keep these tidbits of insight in mind for an easy, breazey, safe ride!

Ride predictably! Straight, smooth, and consistent! Sudden accelerations, slowdowns or sharp turns can be surprising and risky.

Remember “Telephone”? See something, say something, and pass along the message!  Glass, grates, rocks… Shout it out so it can echo and reverberate throughout the ride to the last rider! If there’s a pothole, yell “pothole!”

Don’t pop the bubble! Leave space for yourself and those around you. If you need to maneuver around, you’ll be set with wiggle room.

Signal! Let your arms move just as much as your legs! Signal left, right, and stopping.

Pass with care! Pass on the left with a friendly heads up.

Rider down? Let a helpful ride leader know! Ride leaders provide support, encouragement, mechanical help, and medical attention.

Waves pave the way! Waves and smiles go a long way communicating with cars, pedestrians and other cyclists on the road. Be friendly and indicate your intentions (and gratitude!).

Sidewalks are for stopping! Stop on the side. If you need to stop, pull over to the side out of the way.

Bicyclist overflow? Stay right and stay in the lane. Groups become masses and masses can spillover. Stay in the lane or on the right side as much as possible.
