A BICYCLE group is encouraging Ballarat residents to ditch their cars and dig their bikes out of the garage to avoid the high cost of petrol.

Ballarat Bicycle User Group acting chairman John Barnes said cycling was an attractive alternative as the weather warmed up.

"People can do a favour for themselves by saving money and getting healthy, and a favour for the environment," Mr Barnes said.

The group aims to dispel the misconception that cyclists needed lycra and an expensive bike.
"We want to get the message out there that you don't need to wear lycra for a trip to the corner shop."

He said he expected cycling to become more popular as petrol prices increased further.
The group will hold a Time to Ride program for people aged over 50 who would like to get back on their bikes.

The Bicycle Victoria program was successfully piloted in Geelong last year, providing support to help people take part in cycling in a non-competitive and fun environment.

The program will start on September 11 and people interested in taking part should call 1800 639 634 for more information.

The Bicycle User Group also expects to release a map of Ballarat's bike paths and lanes.

"Ballarat is very bicycle-friendly, because it is fairly flat with lots of bike lanes and paths," Mr Barnes said.
