The Tweed Ride + New Class – Bike Handling Skills February News

Thank you for your interest in C.I.C.L.E…and for your support throughout the year.

What an amazing 2016 it has been. With a sponsorship from Metro Safe Routes to School Pilot Program, C.I.C.L.E. created an overall strategy to offer biking and walking safety instruction to LAUSD schools in and around high injury streets, such as Hollywood and Pico boulevards. We wrote and produced two fun and engaging videos for children and parents about walking and biking to school and translated the films into Spanish. In addition to the videos we created a Walk Safe, Bike Safe workbook, Safety Trading cards and an associated Walk Safe, Bike Safe workshop. This was taught at Coffees with the Principal and Parent Resource Centers at schools located near high injury streets. Parents were taught biking and walking safety so they could teach the concepts to their children as well as others in their communities.

Our community rides became the perfect and safe opportunity for parents to practice what was learned through the Walk Safe, Bike Safe workshops. Since some parents didn’t have the capacity or desire to ride a bike, we started a walking component with our group rides. Partnering with schools and organizations like the Equitas Academy in Pico Union and Los Angeles Walks, we reached groups that never before had participated on our community rides. Soon we had principals leading our walks and parents joining us by walking with their small children riding tricycles, scooters and bikes with training wheels.

C.I.C.L.E. joins the Vision Zero Alliance

Screen Shot 2017-02-06 at 3.39.44 PMThe Vision Zero Alliance is an organization of more than 20 community groups working toward zero vehicular deaths by the year 2025 and safe streets for people walking or riding a bike. C.I.C.L.E.’s focus will be erasing parents and children vehicular deaths walking to or from school through the Alliance’s Vision Zero Safe Routes to School Committee.

Recently C.I.C.L.E.’s Managing Director, Vanessa Gray, wrote about the many deaths on Sunset Boulevard in her neighborhood and the steps community members can take to make changes on their city streets to be safe for people walking or biking.
